QWC Finals Round Of 16 - It's A Knockout!
QWC Finals Round Of 16 Sat 30 November – Tue 03 December
Save Me v Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To…)
The first round of 16 match saw no.5 seed (the highest of May’s compositions) Save Me squaring up against Mercury’s tetchy tribute Death On Two Legs. As it turned out Save Me had no need to hang it’s head, triumphing 67-40 over DOTL.
Killer Queen v The Millionaire Waltz
The next match saw Killer Queen (8th seed) play The Millionaire Waltz (4th seed). Despite being recommended at the price there was to be no Pretty Woman reprise as the high class escort lost out 54-53 to the moneyed prancer. The Millionaire Waltz is now matched with Save Me at the quarterfinal stage.
The March Of The Black Queen v Don’t Stop Me Now
Queen II centrepiece and third seed MOTBQ was strong favourite against Greatest Hit Don’t Stop Me Now. Expectations were fulfilled as the Queen of the night froze out Mr Fahrenheit, MOTBQ thumping DSMN 81-24.
Somebody To Love v These Are The Days Of Our Lives
These Are The Days Of Our Lives had it all to do taking on top seed Somebody To Love. There proved to be little sentiment shown to the Taylor track, Somebody To Love confirming it’s favourite status via a 100-5 vote win. STL now takes MOTBQ in a monumental quarterfinal tie.
Innuendo v The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke
An existential crisis and a lunatic asylum-inspired soundscape paired up as Innuendo took on The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke. Against the odds it was 22nd seed Innuendo that ousted 11th seed TFFMS (54-48).
The Show Must Go On v Love Of My Life
The final single from Freddie’s final album took on perennial concert favourite Love Of My Life in the next round of 16 match. TSMGO’s emotional and emotive heft duly overpowered the lowest remaining seed LOML (73-29), setting up an all Innuendo (the album) quarterfinal tie with Innuendo (the song).
Spread Your Wings v Liar
The penultimate round of 16 tie saw News Of The World ballad Spread Your Wings take on Queen I rocker Liar. Both had been released as the second singles off their parent albums, but it was the Deacon track that won through 47-42.
Bohemian Rhapsody v Fat Bottomed Girls
Second seed and signature Queen song Bohemian Rhapsody was paired with Brian May’s ode to the larger lady, Fat Bottomed Girls. Unsurprisingly Bo Rhap punctured any hopes of progression by the curvy cyclists via a 77-12 victory. This sets up a quarterfinal tie between Spread Your Wings and Bo Rhap.
