QWC Final Group Stage Round 1 - As It Began...
QWC Group Stages Round 1 Fri 15 – Mon 18 November
Group A
The inaugural Queen World Cup finals kicked off with Save Me winning the Game and the match via a 65-43 win over The Prophet’s Song. The other Group A opener went to form as Dadd-rocker The Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke defeated I Want It All (73-35).
Group B
Group B top seed Death On Two Legs (dedicated to…) predictably beat lowest seeded qualifier Crazy Little Thing Called Love (63-45). However, there was a hint of a suggestion of an upset as Innuendo fended off Dragon Attack (66-42).
Group C
Group C top seedy sex worker Killer Queen dashed the hopes of romantics everywhere, Love Of My Life left bleeding (80-26). Meanwhile, I Want To Break Free couldn’t be separated from Now I’m Here due to a 53-53 draw.
Group D
The Millionaire Waltz cashed in with a winning start to Group D (67-39) despite the pier pressure from Brighton Rock. In the other group opener It’s Late was left lagging as The Show Must Go On upset the odds with a 60-46 victory.
Group E
One of the tournament favourites March Of The Black Queen laid down a marker by smashing Stone Cold Crazy 90-17 in this Group E match. In the other Group E game Liar defeated Under Pressure (59-48), leaving Hot Space’s only QWC Finals representative already up against it.
Group F
Group F top seed Spread Your Wings enjoyed a 65-42 win over default QWC holder We Are The Champions, whilst Jazz favourite Don’t Stop Me Now dominated possession (always having the ball) and recorded a 63-44 victory over Radio Ga Ga.
Group G
Pre-tournament favourite Somebody To Love opened with the biggest win of all round 1 matches, leaving One Vision black-eyed and beaten (101-6). However, Group G second seed Another One Bites The Dust was left with slim pickings as Fat Bottomed Girls squeezed through 55-52.
Group H
Mercury’s overblown opus Bohemian Rhapsody had no problem dispatching bottom seed and sweary, syphilitic rodent Great King Rat 88-19. However, GKR may yet be boosted in round 2 by rumours of securing the titular role in Disney’s Ratatouille sequel. In the final Round 1 match sentiment won the day as These Are The Days Of Our Lives nailed Group H second seed Hammer To Fall (59-48).
